Neck Lumps

Neck lumps refer to any swelling of normal structures of the neck. The vast majority are common conditions, such as enlarged "glands" or lymph nodes, which frequently occur during infections. Other neck lumps however, can represent pathologic conditions, and should be investigated.

Neck lumps can include:

• Lymph node enlargement - benign or malignant
• Thyroid gland
• Cysts, such as branchial cysts
• Abscess or infection
• conditions related to structures in the neck: trachea, oesophagus, nerves, blood vessels and muscles
• Ranula
• Salivary gland enlargement

Discuss any of these conditions with your GP or specialist. A thorough head & neck examination will be performed, and investigations may be ordered including blood tests, scans and needle biopsies.
