Throat & Larynx Cancer

Cancer of the throat and larynx are a common presentation to an ENT Surgeon. It can present with a range of symptoms, some of which can remain vague. Remember to discuss any of the following with your GP and do not hesitate to ask for a referral.

Symptoms may include:

• Hoarseness or Change in Voice
• Difficulty Swallowing
• Cough
• Pain in The Throat
• Bleeding
• Ulcers
• Ear Pain or Discomfort (which may be referred pain)
• Neck Lumps
• Weight Loss

A history of smoking and alcohol can increase the chance of cancer, but tumours are not uncommon in the non-smoking population. Your examination will include a detailed inspection of your neck, mouth and throat, including flexible endoscopy (a tiny camera that will pass to the level of your voice box).

Treatments for any of these conditions are much more favourable when detected earlier.
